At Scitech, we answer questions.
And question answers.

As a not-for-profit organisation, for more than three decades Scitech has brought engaging and entertaining science experiences to everyone from adventure-ready kids to inquisitive adults – igniting a lifelong curiosity in the process.

We’ve found the experiences that engage the hands also engage the mind – whether you’re three or 103, it’s hard not to learn when you’re exploring and asking questions.

What We Do

At the Scitech Discovery Centre in West Perth, our interactive exhibits, Chevron Science Theatre and Puppet Theatre live shows, excursion programs, and events are designed, created, developed and built by our people in-house to get visitors talking about their experience long after they’ve left the centre. The Scitech planetarium is one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and allows visitors to be fully immersed as they explore the night sky and further into space.

Beyond the Discovery Centre, you’ll see us part of major community events such as the Perth Royal Show and WA Day with our hands-on activities and live demonstrations. Our Statewide team visits every regional and remote Western Australian primary school every three years. From the Kimberley to Albany, our Statewide in-person and digital programs including our Aboriginal Education Program allows us to bring science to all corners of our state. Our Learning Futures team facilitates professional learning programs for teachers in maths and digital technologies, providing opportunities for teachers to further their skills and knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) teaching so they are ready to future-proof students. Our feature exhibitions also travel around the globe hired by international science centres, world-renowned for their inspiring creativity.

Our digital offerings help us bring science experiences to an even wider audience including podcasts, the YouTube series Toy Tear Down, Science at Home activities and Particle, Scitech’s independent media hub that connects young adults to science stories from Western Australia and beyond.

At the centre of everything we do is our people. We know that the biggest impact we can make is through the engaging and meaningful interactions you have with our Science Communicators and staff, and this is infused throughout all that Scitech does.

Our History

Scitech’s engagement with STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – dates back to before the term even existed.

In the 1980s, three influential Western Australian figures – physicist Emeritus Professor John de Laeter, mining leader Sir Laurence Brodie-Hall, and politician and computing pioneer the Hon. Mal Bryce – asked the question: “If our future depends on science and technology, how can we get people inspired?” The answer was Scitech, opening our doors in 1988 with a mission to inspire the entire state’s collective curiosity. This continues to be our purpose and is not only as relevant now as it was 35 years ago, but is possibly more important than ever.

Why STEM matters

From how our money moves to how we move, where our clothes are made to what we eat and so much more – this tiny acronym is part of almost every aspect of our lives.

We have long understood the importance of getting young people engaged in STEM subjects to inspire them to pursue career pathways in STEM industries. But as technology has become more integrated across more industries, STEM skills and literacy are becoming an essential part of any occupation, not to mention in many aspects of daily life for people of all ages. We believe that by developing STEM interest, awareness, participation and capabilities, we expand our future workforce, diversify our economy, and empower our community to be active participants in an increasingly technological and digital world. It also builds skills such as collaboration, creativity, communication and critical thinking, that allows us to question, understand and solve challenges and issues, from those we face day to day to those affecting our communities.

At Scitech, we’re here for anyone who has ever asked “why?” Because while answers are important, it’s the questions that really get us thinking.

Our purpose is to inspire engagement by all Western Australians in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
