CSIRO Lab is a hands-on science and technology laboratory located at Scitech. CSIRO Lab is part of a network of CSIRO Education labs throughout Australia.
Homeschool classes in the CSIRO Lab at Scitech
Term 1, 2017
Watch this space for upcoming details of CSIRO Lab workshops to kick off your year fully inspired to get into STEM.
We will be running series of events for children in Year 1 to 10, covering science (chemistry and biology), technology (robotics), engineering (making science based toys) and maths (Nature’s secret codes).
Learn about the states of matter and how materials change from one state to another.
Chemical Sciences, Science Inquiry Skills, Science as a Human Endeavour
Age: 6-12 year olds
|Thursday 2 February||Friday 3 February|
Robotics challenge: 9-14 year olds
Students learn about robots and their place in research and society, before exploring sensors that a robot vehicle needs to operate. Using robots, students will learn how robots are programmed to complete a task.
Digital Technologies, Physical Sciences, Science as a Human Endeavour, ICT Capability, Critical and Creative Thinking
|Thursday 9 February|
Making science toys
Children will learn how physics explains the functioning of kinetic toys and then build their own to take home. Best suited to 6-12 year olds.
Design and Technologies, Physical Science, Critical and Creative Thinking
Age: 6-12 year olds
|Wednesday 15 February||Thursday 16 February||Friday 17 February|
Children will use microscopes to explore the hidden world of mini-beasts and microscopic living things.
Biological Sciences, Science Inquiry Skills, ICT Capability, Digital Technologies, Science as a Human Endeavour
Age: 6-12 year old
|Thursday 23 February||Friday 24 February|
Inquiry maths: Nature’s secret codes – NEW!
Years 4-7 (60 mins)
Students explore patterns in maths and science and how problem solving and inquiry skills are useful for biologists. We will guide them in discovering how maths provides the basis for understanding patterns in the natural world.
Mathematics –Patterns & Algebra, Number and Place Value
Science - Biological Sciences, Science Inquiry Skills
|Wednesday 1 March||Thursday 2 March|
Stop Motion Animation
Students will learn how to use stop motion animation techniques to create a short film. They can choose to use a webcam or digital microscope as their camera or use both. They can choose from a range of materials to create their characters and sets. They will create a title page and credits, and learn about copyright issues and where to source creative commons sound tracks. They will be able to take their finished product home.
Digital Technologies, Biological Sciences, Science Inquiry Skills, Media Arts, Critical and Creative Thinking, ICT Capability
Age: 9-14 year olds
|Monday 8 May||Tuesday 9 May||Wednesday 10 May||Tuesday 16 May|
