Opposites… Fascinating, aren’t they?
One minute you are planning a lovely day out with the family, the next you are getting your tantrum tolerance levels redefined.
This Winter, you are one choice away from a good day! Celebrate opposites with us, from exploring microscopic life to marvelling in the immense universe.
To help you make the most of your day, we’re opening earlier, with doors open from 9am daily (usually 9.30am).
Explore an Activity
Explore science at every scale, from marvelling at the vastness of the universe in the planetarium, to investigating microscopic worlds in a hands-on activity and pop-up science.
🌱 MicroWorld Activity – Rio Tinto Innovation Central
Shrink down to the cellular level and discover what makes plants tick. Collect stamps and learn what tiny things are inside a plant cell.
🔍 Small, Smaller and Smallest! – Rio Tinto Innovation Central
A magnifying glass, a Dynolite and a Microscope. Are the plants getting bigger or are we getting smaller?
🔬 Pop-up Science – Rio Tinto Innovation Central
See a real Scanning Electron Microscope in action and discover a hidden world beyond what your eyes can see. You might even have the chance to see your own hair magnified thousands of times!
The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is an incredible piece of equipment that uses a beam of electrons to image at a sub-micron resolution, which is much higher than it is possible with an optical microscope. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to interact with such a machine at Scitech, all thanks to our friends at Curtin University. Don’t miss out!
Catch a Show
Start close to home and journey far beyond. From our place on Earth to the vastness of the Universe, discover just how big our cosmic neighbourhood really is. Then switch gears and explore the science of heat in our Science Theatre show Hot vs Cold.
Hot vs Cold
Extinguish your burning curiosity in this show about heat, how it moves and how to protect yourself from it.
Heat and cold – and how we control them – are some of the most important forces that shape our world. Heat drives weather, ocean, tectonic and climate systems. Controlling heat helps us keep our homes and natural environment safe, cook our food or forge new substances.
