Congratulations to the 32 teachers from 16 schools who recently completed Scitech’s 2022 Lighthouse Maths program, which saw an increased positive influence in student engagement, understanding and performance in the powerful problem-solving approach to maths.

This year-long professional learning program aims to develop teachers’ daily classroom practice and instructional methods in maths education by focusing on the Powerful Problem-Solving approach.

Four primary school teachers who completed the program last year became Lighthouse Maths coaches in 2022.
Throughout the year, they led the 2022 Lighthouse Maths teachers through workshops and coaching sessions to provide a toolkit that the teachers could use to enhance their classroom instruction, and offered support and guidance to strengthen participants confidence and capabilities in maths teaching.

The program also featured facilitated networking sessions where the participants could share the ups and downs of their mathematical journey with their peers.

“The training we provide through Lighthouse Maths fills a gap in Western Australian primary mathematics education,” Professional Learning Consultant and Lighthouse Maths creator Shyam Drury said.

The Lighthouse Maths program takes teachers beyond traditional mathematics education of rote learning and memorisation, leading them to engage their students in a practice of discussion, problem solving and reasoning.

Students work in groups on whiteboards as part of the lesson, where they share knowledge with each other to try different strategies, make connections across different topics, and find solutions.

Groups then get the chance to share their findings with the class which helps to reinforce learnings and further develop confidence and communication skills.

Delivered with support from Chevron Australia, the Lighthouse Maths program is part of Scitech’s commitment to support teachers and create opportunities to further their skills and knowledge in STEM teaching so they are ready to future-proof students for a changing world.
