With a new exciting space rocket debris exhibit, a visit from NASA, plus a Lunar Landing Challenge, there’s something for everyone at Scitech this National Science Week!
Space Rocket Debris Exhibit – Lands at Scitech on Monday, 12 August
Get up close to a piece of a rocket ship that has been to space and see first-hand the engineering and design that goes into a spacecraft! The object was originally investigated by the Australian Space Agency and discovered to be part of a polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV), a rocket designed and operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation to launch satellites into orbit primarily. The space debris is part of the third stage of the PSLV, which, after burning through its fuel, is designed to separate from the rocket and fall back to Earth.
Located in the Scitech Planetarium foyer. The exhibition can be viewed every day during opening hours. Read more.
Meet a NASA Space Scientist – Sunday 18 August, 10.30am and 11.45am
We’re thrilled to have Sandra E. Connelly, Deputy Associate Administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, visit Scitech! Sandra provides executive leadership, overall planning, direction, and management of NASA’s $7B science portfolio focused on the scientific exploration of Earth, the Sun, solar system, universe, and biological and physical sciences.
In this inspirational session, Sandra will delve into NASA’s mission and science objectives, providing an insightful overview of the various types of science they conduct. She’ll share fascinating examples of recent discoveries from their missions and highlight connections with Australia and the local region.
Located in our Rio Tinto Innovation Central gallery.
Lunar Lander Challenge – Saturday 10 – Sunday 11 & Saturday 17 – Sunday 18 August
The NASA Artemis Program will take astronauts back to the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and inspiration for a new generation of explorers. Artemis will use lunar roving vehicles, also known as Lunar Rovers, to gather data from the Moon.
In this hands-on activity, see if you can build a lander using the materials provided. Can you land your Lunar Rover on the surface of the Moon, safely and in one piece?
Located in our Rio Tinto Innovation Central gallery.
All of Scitech’s National Science Week activities are included in the cost of your Scitech ticket.
